The taxonomy of the freshwater crabs of Mt Kenya and the Aberdare Mountains in central Kenya, East Africa is revised based on a large collection of previously unreported material. Three species belonging to the genus Potamonautes MacLeay, 1838 (Potamonautidae Bott, 1970) are recognized from the region and redescribed. Potamonautes jeanneli (Bouvier, 1921) and P. odhneri (Colosi, 1924) are both ...
متن کاملAcetazolamide in prevention of acute mountain sickness: a double-blind controlled cross-over study.
Twenty-four amateur climbers took part in a double-blind controlled cross-over trial of acetazolamide versus placebo for the prevention of acute mountain sickness. They climbed Kilimanjaro (5895 m) and Mt Kenya (5186 m) in three weeks with five rest days between ascents. The severity of acute mountain sickness was gauged by a score derived from symptoms recorded daily by each subject. On kilima...
متن کاملImpact of monsoons, temperature, and CO2 on the rainfall and ecosystems of Mt. Kenya during the Common Era
a r t i c l e i n f o Glacial and early Holocene-age sediments from lakes on Mt. Kenya have documented strong responses of mon-tane hydrology, ecosystems, and carbon cycling to past changes in temperature and atmospheric CO 2 concentrations. However, little is known about climate and ecosystem variations on Mt. Kenya during the Common Era (the past ~2000 years), despite mounting evidence for si...
متن کاملChronology of Quaternary glaciations in East Africa
A new glacial chronology for equatorial East Africa is developed using in situ cosmogenic 36Cl measured in 122 boulders from moraines on Mount Kenya and Kilimanjaro. The oldest deposits sampled on Kilimanjaro yield a limiting 36Cl age of s 360 calendar kyr (all 36Cl ages are in calendar years, cal. kyr or cal. yr). On Mount Kenya, the oldest moraines give ages of 355^420 kyr (Liki I) and 255^28...
